St Alban's Heritage Project Community Activities

COMMUNITY HERITAGE ACTIVITIES

We believe our church has a fascinating history. Through additional research and development of the 'hidden histories' of St Alban's we intend to engage people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally with our church and its fascinating history. We hope to reinvigorate interest in our church and its heritage at a wider level by sharing information on the role played by AWN Pugin and EW Pugin, Hardman and Rope, the connection with Macclesfield and its silk industry, our WW2 parishioners, and the stories behind the saints, personalities and the French emigre, Father Robin.

We hope to share this information by different media such as this website, a guide, self-guided tour, virtual tour, exhibition and community activities.

KEY STAGE 1 ‘inSPIRE’ ST ALBAN’S TOWER COMPETITION

June 2018

Did you know that we are in the middle of a big project to repair the tower and tower roof of our church at St Alban’s to stop the rain coming in and ensure that it is good shape for another few hundred years? We would like you to get involved with our Tower Project.

Not only did Augustus Welby Pugin (1812-1852) play an important part in designing the Houses of Parliament, but he also designed our church at St Alban’s. He is known for using the Gothic style. This means pointed arches, vaulted roofs, large windows and ...spires.

We want you to colour in the picture of our church tower. Use your imagination and best colouring skills. Try to be as neat as possible.

There will be prizes for the best entries. The winning designs will also be displayed as part of the Tower Project Exhibition in September and the winners will have the option of a visit up the tower at St Alban’s.

The competition deadline is Friday 29th June 2018 and the winners will be announced in July. Entries should include your name, age and contact details and can be returned to school or church.

KEY STAGE 2 ‘inSPIRE’ ST ALBAN’S TOWER COMPETITION

But St Alban’s has never had a spire! Although there will probably never be a real spire on our tower, what do you think a spire on St Alban’s might look like?

We want you to design a spire for our church. You will need to research spire designs online and look at pictures of other churches designed by AW Pugin. Using the outline drawing of a church attached, create your own design for a spire for St Alban’s. What shape would it be? How tall would it be? What colour would it be? How would it be decorated?

There will be prizes for the best entries. The winning designs will also be displayed as part of the Tower Project Exhibition in September and the winners will also have the option of a visit up the tower at St Alban’s; something that not many people have ever done.

The competition deadline is Friday 29th June 2018 and the winners will be announced in July. Entries should include your name, age and contact details and can be returned to school or church.

June 2018

Rossini Concert

Our first Barnaby and Heritage tie-in event was a massive success. We opened our doors to the Macclesfield Oriana Choir who performed Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle together with selected items from Rossini's "Stabat Mater" and the people of Macclesfield came in their droves!

This fundraising event was held in conjunction with the Macclesfield Barnaby Festival and St Alban's Patronal Festival. Everyone had a wonderful evening as beautiful music and singing rang out in our Pugin church.

Profits from the ticket sales and a retiring collection raised funds towards our Tower Project.

November 2017

Community Meeting

Members of St Alban's parish gathered for the bi-annual parish meeting in November 2017. During the meeting, the Tower Project Team Leader, Kirstin Bisgood-Smith, gave a presentation on the work needed to make sure the tower of our beautiful and historic church is safe. As Kirstin explained, we want to make sure the tower lasts for at least another 200 years!

The parish learnt how the grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund and contributions from parishioners through the Our Mission Together programme had helped make this dream a reality.

There was great excitement about the plans presented by Kirstin and celebration that this work would begin in 2018.
